YOUR MOUTH, UNDONE

AUGUST 9 – SEPTEMBER 6, 2012

OPENING RECEPTION:
THURSDAY, AUGUST 9, 7 – 9 PM

Language is ultimately ineffectual; even as we push words out through our mouths, we are alone in our experience of the world. Language is the manufactured barrier between us and our own mortality and as we speak or eat or kiss, we attempt to connect to the world around us, to conjoin our human experiences with those we love, yet like the mouth itself, our lives are singular and complex, forever attempting connection to another despite our isolation.

GARBOUSHIAN GALLERY is pleased to announce Your Mouth, Undone, an exhibition of new sculptures by Michelle Carla Handel and new paintings by Eve Wood.

Exploring the complexities that exist between the exterior space of the natural world with the interiority of the human body, both Handel and Wood claim new and intensely realized territories whether in two-dimensional or sculptural form, proclaiming a near-sacred authenticity, an opportunity for deeper translation and individual transformation.

Working in malleable materials including muslin, polyester fiberfill, wood, knit fabric, silicone rubber and urethane, Handel’s eccentric biomorphic objects are at once monumental and awkward wherein the private interior of the body is made public, calling into question notions of identity, and how the human body is yet another “construct” by which we identify ourselves culturally. Central to this work is a deeply experienced inquiry into sexual ideation and desire, how even our own human longings are suspect to investigation.

Similiarly, Eve Wood’s work explores the tenuous, often complicated relationship between man and nature and how we negotiate shared space wherein a traffic cone gives birth to a hummingbird and a Bengal tiger rests its head in a monk’s lap.

Working in oil stick on panel, Wood’s images betray a tension between the known world and that of the imagination. These connections are simultaneously tender and harrowing, yet always seemingly necessary. Do we control the natural world or does it control us, and how do our individual negotiations affect and transform the broader cultural tapestry?

An opening reception for Handell and Wood will take place on Thursday, August 9, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. The exhibition will remain on view until September 6, 2012.
