Diverse and magnetic, Perspectives in California Captivity showcases the provocative and seductive talent that embodies the captivating city of Los Angeles.
In Perspectives in California Captivity, each photographer was given unlimited access to one location in sunny Southern California. With their own professional models, each artist chose spots, scenery, and set-ups that they felt passionately about or were attracted to, without knowledge of what the other artists were creating. This sensually-charged project has been a long time in the making, and offers viewers not only a fascinating insider look at the creative brain of a photographer, but also the innovation of three amazing artists' minds with restrictive guidelines and limitations to enhance the challenge for them. The final assortment of photographs on view in Perspectives in California Captivity was chosen and curated by the gallery and exemplifies the three different photographers' artistic styles and personalities.
Steve Diet Goedde is known for his subtle approach to photographing the high-gloss world of erotic art in a very non-gloss, down-to-earth style. His works are intimate and sexual, provoking the senses and engaging the imagination. Goedde has been a fine art erotic photographer for nearly 25 years. His attention to composition and black and white tonal quality has given him the reputation of being "The Ansel Adams of Erotica." He has published three books of his photography, and will be releasing a limited edition booklet of the work in this exhibition. In the genre of erotic photography, the cliché and obvious prevail, but Steve's work stands out because of the familiarity he manages to capture in subjects that may otherwise seem unapproachable or even unattainable. He manages to create compositions that combine stimulating perfection and beauty with an honest intimacy that feels genuine.
Dave Naz is a photographer whose work revolves around the varied identities and personae of our time, including trans visibility. Dave Naz is a photographer of sex and meaning, women and landscape. Innovative and self-taught, Naz's photography stands out in the erotic arts because of his impeccable eye for juxtaposition and provocative visual instincts. His bright colors and intuitive style are unmistakable, and his work offers viewers something that is incredibly rare-he can make something plain and banal look and feel like pleasure and love. His photos embody the perfect L.A. seduction, with gorgeously contemporary and interesting models. He has published eight books, and his ninth book, Identity, published by Rare Bird Books releases this July. Naz's photographs are shown in galleries all over the world and his work has appeared in GQ, Maxim, Stern.de, and Salon.
Victor Lightworship's work is known the world over for its powerful story-telling abilities and of course, its magnificent use of light. Getting his start in shooting commercials for clients like Miller Beer, Women's Wear Daily and Cirque du Soleil, Lightworship found a true talent for expressing sexual desire and creating captivating and tantalizing erotic photography. At the height of his commercial success Lightworship abandoned his mainstream career in order to focus on his erotic artwork. He has been published in magazines, books, and exhibitions, including a hard cover book of his bondage photography called Strictly Bondage published by Goliath Books. He has gained national recognition for his most recent controversial image published as the cover of July 2017 issue of Hustler Magazine. Lightworship is passionate about creating an atmosphere for his provocative narrative-infused photography. His work offers an intimate and sexy glimpse at something that seems forbidden or secret. His models complement the beautiful Southern California location perfectly and additionally tease the viewers with coy glances and naughty peeks. The end result is balanced, attractive, and invites viewers to explore the multi-layered world between reality and fantasy, with his own brand of visual seduction as their guide.
Perspectives in California Captivity opens Friday, July 14, with a reception from 7pm to 9pm. The exhibition will remain on view until August 11, 2017.
